Topsil Expands in Frederikssund
Dec 16, 2025 Topsil in Frederikssund – owned by the Taiwan-based GlobalWafers – is moving forward with two major expansions of its activities in Denmark, strengthening Danish Production and Advanced Silicon R&D.Two new expansions on Danish soil
This year, two significant projects have been successfully secured:
- An expansion of Topsil’s existing production of 200 mm silicon ingots in Frederikssund.
- A new R&D activity focused on developing and producing 300 mm silicon ingots.
Both initiatives strengthen Denmark’s position within advanced materials and energy-efficient power electronics, and they are expected to increase the company’s local footprint significantly.
”Topsil’s decision to scale up advanced silicon production and also to expand R&D in Frederikssund are exactly the kind of strategic investments Denmark needs to lead in future technologies. Copenhagen Capacity was proud to qualify this decision with cost-benefit benchmarking and supporting state-aid. Topsil’s expansion reinforces Denmark’s competitiveness in critical semiconductor value chains and creates jobs that power our green and digital future."
- Asbjørn Overgaard, CEO at Copenhagen Capacity
Supporting strong Danish competitiveness
Copenhagen Capacity has played a key role in reinforcing Topsil’s Danish business case. For the production expansion, Copenhagen Capacity delivered detailed cost comparisons between operating in Frederikssund and Milan, where GlobalWafers also has facilities. These analyses helped demonstrate the advantages of placing the growth in Denmark.
”Copenhagen Capacity has been instrumental in assisting us to build a solid business case to expand in Frederikssund with both a new R&D site and an expansion of our existing production facility. Copenhagen Capacity is a trusted partner, and their services have made substantial contribution to our success and growth.”
- Hans Peder Mikkelsen, President Topsil A/S.
For the R&D expansion, Copenhagen Capacity supported Topsil by highlighting the need for national funding to political decision-makers, including Minister for Industry Morten Bødskov, as well as through commentary in the business daily Børsen. Copenhagen Capacity also contributed to Topsil’s EUDP application by providing argumentation and documentation.
Funding secured for future silicon technology
Topsil has now received DKK 44 million in support from The Danish Energy Agency’s EUDP scheme (Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme) for its R&D efforts to develop the new 300 mm silicon ingots – a technology expected to play a key role in future energy infrastructure and power electronics.
The expansions reinforce Topsil’s presence in Frederikssund and mark another success in attracting and retaining high-tech investments in the Greater Copenhagen Region.
