Global energy company NOV Inc. keeps R&D laboratory in Denmark

Jul 10, 2026 With Copenhagen Capacity's support, energy company NOV Inc. has chosen to uphold a critical part of its Danish operations after considering relocation abroad.

NOV Inc. is a leading multinational energy company headquartered in Texas, USA, with more than 31,000 employees worldwide. The company provides equipment, technology, and services across the global energy value chain, including drilling equipment, pumps, valves, and advanced offshore and subsea solutions.

Denmark has long played a strategic role in NOV's global footprint, particularly within advanced manufacturing of subsea flexible pipes and materials research. With a strong presence in Denmark, NOV's global Subsea Production Systems division is headquartered in Brøndby and operates a large-scale production facility at the Port of Kalundborg.

Copenhagen Capacity contributed to NOV's decision to stay in Denmark

As part of a review of its global operations, NOV considered relocating its R&D laboratory in Brøndby to Brazil - a move that would have shifted critical research capabilities away from Denmark. During this process, Copenhagen Capacity worked closely with NOV Subsea Production Systems' Danish management team to build the case for retaining the R&D laboratory in Denmark.

"Copenhagen Capacity provided us with valuable information on framework conditions, key local strongholds, and research competencies in Denmark, as well as insights into the Danish labour market. This was instrumental in our decision-making process. Central to NOV's decision were the strong research competencies available in Denmark, the ability to recruit highly skilled specialists, and the location's strategic proximity to our key markets," says Torbjörn Weywadt Nilsen, President of NOV Subsea Production Systems.

Through tailored benchmarking analysis and in-depth insights into the Greater Copenhagen ecosystem, Copenhagen Capacity helped demonstrate Denmark's competitive advantages in advanced research, talent availability, and innovation capacity - strengthening the business case for retaining NOV Subsea Production Systems' R&D activities in Denmark.

NOV's continued presence strengthens Danish energy innovation

The decision to keep the laboratory in Denmark retained 35 high-quality R&D jobs and an investment exceeding DKK 100 million in science-based and knowledge-intensive activities. NOV's continued presence further reinforces Denmark's position as a global hub for energy innovation.

"We are very pleased that NOV Subsea Production Systems has chosen to keep their R&D competencies in Denmark. Their continued engagement strengthens the energy innovation ecosystem in Greater Copenhagen and highlights the strong capabilities we offer within advanced research and engineering," says Asbjørn Overgaard, CEO of Copenhagen Capacity.

Copenhagen Capacity supports international companies not only in establishing new operations in Denmark, but also in expanding, adapting to, and navigating strategic challenges. In NOV's case, this meant delivering data-driven insights and strategic guidance - ultimately helping to secure highly skilled jobs and future investment in Denmark.
