Copenhagen is UNESCO World Capital of Architecture in 2023

Copenhagen will be hosting the UIA World Congress of Architects in 2023, and it will be named UNESCO World Capital of Architecture. During the World Congress, Copenhagen Capacity will assist foreign companies in experiencing Greater Copenhagen’s beacons in sustainable urban development.

Copenhagen will be World Capital of Architecture in 2023; a title assigned by UNESCO to the host city of the International Architectural Association UIA's World Congress.

Copenhagen won the bid to host the 2023 World Congress of Architects in 2017 after presenting an ambitious theme focusing on ‘Sustainable futures – Leave no one behind’.

By hosting the World Congress, Copenhagen will put a strong focus on the role of architecture in sustainable city planning and promote, discuss, develop and showcase architecture as a crucial tool to achieving the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Experience Copenhagen’s sustainable urban planning

During the World Congress of Architecture in Copenhagen in July 2023, Copenhagen Capacity will organise site visits for foreign companies wishing to experience the city’s beacons and biggest achievements within energy efficient building, architecture, green city spaces and sustainable urban planning.

For example, Upcycle Studios, which uses “waste” such as residual wood, crushed concrete and windows from old buildings in the construction of 20 New York-inspired town houses in Ørestad South, and the UN17 Village, which is the first building project in the world that translates all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into tangible action.

“The UIA World Congress attracts thousands of foreign companies and experts in architecture and urban planning. Through tailored visiting tours, Copenhagen Capacity wants to showcase Greater Copenhagen’s beacons within urban sustainable development as well as business opportunities for foreign companies”

- Anette Steenberg, Director of Investment Promotion in Copenhagen Capacity

Partnership platform for co-creation

The unfolding of the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture will happen in close partnership with the City of Copenhagen, UIA, UNESCO, the secretariat behind UIA 2023 CPH, Wonderful Copenhagen and the Danish Association of Architects, and partnerships will play a major role.

A partnership platform for side events, experiments and research is on the table, inviting Danish advisers, companies, talents, creative communities and educational institutions to be co-creators of a broad citizen track.

“The global climate challenge can only be solved through collaboration across industries and country borders. Partnerships and co-creation between companies, public authorities, researchers and citizens is part of the Danish DNA, and we are inviting foreign companies and talents to join us”

- Anette Steenberg, Director of Investment Promotion in Copenhagen Capacity
