27 February 2017
Denmark is renowned for its strong health research traditions and unique way of organising the health data of citizens. The new genome research centre in Denmark will further unfold the great potential of personalised medicine.
Personalised medicine, using the individual’s genetic profile to guide decisions made in regard to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, has huge potential and is developing rapidly in several countries.
Extensive electronic health data registries
Denmark is renowned for its strong health research traditions and unique way of organising the health data of citizens in electronic registries, dating back decades. Based on a common national information infrastructure, the new genome centre in Denmark will ensure the entire setup for collecting samples from patient to be genome sequenced and data to be analysed for research or treatment purposes.
The data and research will be used to identifying medicines that have the best effect on different diseases and patient groups. And together with data from existing national registries and databases, the new genome research centre will further unfold the great potential of personalised medicine in Denmark.
Precision medicine is a priority area in Denmark
The Danish government has allocated EUR 13,41 million in 2017 to co-finance the work on personalised medicine.
‘The genome centre will be a leading initiative within personalised medicine. Based in Greater Copenhagen and collaborating closely with the strong life science cluster in the Aarhus area, the centre will help to ensure that health care and research across the country work together to enhance treatment benefits for patients’, said Health Minister Ellen Trane Nørby.
