Record year for the Copenhagen Metro

Copenhageners are happy with their underground railway. In 2011, 54.3 million passengers rode the metro. This is a record and an increase of almost two million passengers in a year, writes the Danish daily newspaper, Politiken.

- In general we have made progress in public transport over the last few years. This also goes for the metro, transport researcher Per Homann Jespersen told DR Copenhagen.

The large number of passengers even made it to their destination on time almost every time. 98.8 per cent of the metro’s 13,000 daily departures were on time last year.

The managing director of the Metro company, Henrik Plougmann Olsen, has an idea of why the capital’s underground railway is such a big success.

- There has been a lot of building along the metro lines, which of course generates more passengers, especially in Frederiksberg, Ørestad and Amager, he told DR Copenhagen.

The Copenhagen metro was voted the best in the world in 2008, 2009 and 2010 at the international rail conference, Metrorail.
