Government to introduce “green GDP”
04 July 2012
Denmark will no longer measure economic growth purely in monetary terms. The government plans to introduce a "green GDP" in the form of measurements of how much our growth impacts nature, writes DR.dk
This was announced by Minister for Development Cooperation Christian Friis Bach (SocLib) ahead of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- At present, the measurement for growth is far too simple, the minister told Politiken.
The Danish government is giving DKK 10 million to the World Bank for research into green growth indicators. At the same time, Denmark is signing up as a pilot country for using the measurements that the bank recommends.
In just a few years' time, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Interior aims to be routinely publishing indicators on progress and decline within the areas of nature, environment and climate in the same way that economic indicators are published every quarter.
