THE BUSINESS SECTOR VALUES UNIVERSITIES
Jul. 23, 2010 | Topic: Business conditionsThe Ministry of Science’s annual statistics on the commercialisation of research results was recently released. Unfortunately, the Minister of Science had a somewhat pessimistic outlook on the figures. Particularly, she focused heavily on developments in the sale of patents, the spokesman for Danish Universities, Jens Oddershede states.
He points out that when the Minister counts patents, the universities think of increased cooperation, as all studies show that it is primarily long-term research collaborations that provide value to businesses and not sale of individual patents.
- Statistics clearly show that the cooperation between universities and the industry has increased significantly over the years. It is extremely positive that Danish companies - despite the financial crisis - find value in collaborative research projects. Given that the financial crisis has reduced firms' willingness to invest in knowledge beyond the immediate extension of their own strategies, the upholding of 2008 levels must be considered satisfactory, Jens Oddershede writes.
Jens Oddershede agrees that it is important to focus on terms of cooperation between universities and companies, and he also believes that close and long-term relationships is the way to forward to improve collaborations on creating new knowledge and better use of that knowledge.
According to Jens Oddershede, Denmark is well underway, and he looks forward to the universities working together with the Minister and the industry to create a framework for even better results in the future.
