STUDYING ABROAD SHOULD BE MANDATORY
Jul. 22, 2010 | Topic: Business conditionsScience Minister Charlotte Sahl-Madsen has recently put forward a proposal to make studying abroad compulsory for university students. The Confederation of Danish Industries is positive towards the proposal.
- The Confederation of Danish Industries supports the Minister's proposal. University students should be much more prepared for the fact that their professional life will take place in a world characterised by globalisation. They will work for companies with branches in many countries, which work together on a daily basis and with customers all over the world, consultant in the Confederation of Danish Industries, Sarah Gade Hansen, writes.
She believes that it is imperative that young students studying for a business degree such as international business or languages have studied abroad.
It is especially employees with dual competencies – for example language skills combined with a vocational education such as pharmacist – that are in high demand. Employees are required to possess the sufficient intercultural competencies to ensure that the order with the Chinese or Italian company goes through.
- Students must therefore be given a little friendly push to get going. This can be done by making it mandatory for students of certain lines of education to take a semester abroad, or by getting universities to organise more "package deals” with exchange visits with other universities, Sarah Gade Hansen says.
