DEBATE ON TAX RULES FOR FOREIGN RESEARCHERS
Jul. 20, 2010 | Topic: Business conditionsMinister of Taxation Troels Lund Poulsen will prioritise the knowledge workers and pundits and offer lower taxes for a longer period of time to foreign experts who come to Denmark to work.
Today, highly paid foreigners pay either 25% in taxes for the first three years they work in Denmark, or 33% for the first five years. Today the special tax rules for foreign researchers apply to approximately 3,000 people, but only few choose to make use of the offer and stay in Denmark for more than three years.
- We need to attract and retain the needed talent, Troels Lund Poulsen states.
Several organisations are very sympathetic towards the Taxation Minister's proposal.
- We would like the introduction of a model where the highly skilled can stay in Denmark for a long period of time on a reduced tax scheme. Otherwise, they leave the country after a short period, or even worse, they do not come here at all. Furthermore, a superstructure could also be created, so that the tax level for foreign experts is increased gradually, year by year till it reaches the normal Danish tax rate, rather than the current model, where they suffer a huge tax increase, if they choose to stay a few extra years, Kim Bek, Development Director at Copenhagen Capacity, says.
