DANISH STRONG POINTS

Jul. 21, 2010 | Topic: Business conditions

A global world of open borders provides important opportunities and challenges. Globalisation provides the freedom to do what you want when you want. This is true for individuals in education and at workplaces, and it applies to businesses in relation to location, and who they would like to recruit, Head of the Department of Business Economics in the Confederation of Danish Industry, Kent Damsgaard and Managing Director of Copenhagen Capacity, Steen Donner, write.

They believe that decisions can be influenced by strong incentives, so that each country can attract foreign talents and investments.

- To meet the challenges we must first convert the government's 2020-targets into an actual plan of action. We need to make decisions now, in 2011, in 2012 and so forth. Not only when we approach the year of 2020. Denmark is one of the world's most expensive countries in which to produce, so if we are to retain and attract businesses and skilled foreigners, we must also be one of the world's best countries to produce in. As such, we need to lower the corporate and income tax to an internationally competitive level and we must have the latest technology for the best products.

Kent Damsgaard and Steen Donner believe that foreign firms and workers is crucial for the development in Denmark because they generally have a higher level of knowledge, higher productivity and a greater focus on doing things more efficiently.

- Foreign companies are growth engines for the Danish labor market: Even though they only represent 1% of the total number of businesses, they employ 19% of the private sector employees and account for 24% of the Danish turnover. Let us make a clear strategy for what will be the Danish strong points. The more businesses and jobs we can retain and attract the greater wealth we can create for everyone.
