ODENSE STEEL SHIPYARD, LINDØ, BECOMES THE CENTER FOR EUROPEAN OFFSHORE RACE

Mar. 10, 2010

Lindø, which has been facing closure of the factory, celebrated, when the wind turbine company Skykon last Friday chose the shipyard as a location for more than 300 new jobs.

The fast-growing Danish company, which has bought a string of subcontractors in the wind power industry, has leased 100,000 square meters at the old shipyard and will immediately start to rebuild the facilities for the production of foundations for offshore wind turbines.

Negotiations have been going on for more than six months, and Lindø was in close competition with similar industrial areas in Northern Europe.

Skykon decided on Lindø and has rented the facilities for the next 10 years and has an option to rent an even larger area. Right now, the company is to acquire around 10 % of the yard area, which Lindø owner A.P. Møller-Mærsk is currently transforming into an industrial park.

"There is a unique and excellent logistic and capacity compared to the other places we have looked at. At the same time, we are, geographically, very reasonable located compared to Scandinavian and English projects, "says Skykon's CEO, Jesper O'Donnell, who expects to hire between 300 and 350 employees before the end of the year.

To start with, the newly established company Skykon Offshore will produce foundations for offshore wind turbines.
