COPENHAGEN AIRPORT IS SET FOR MAJOR INVESTMENT

Dec. 29, 2011 | Topic: Location and infrastructure

From next year, investment in Copenhagen Airport will reach DKK one billion a year. The chairman of the board considers it necessary to win the battle to become the most important airport in northern Europe, writes Business.dk.

Investment in Copenhagen Airport is set to increase over the next few years and annual investment could even reach DKK one billion as early as next year. Increasing investment is necessary to keep pace with passenger growth in line with the aim of becoming the most important airport in northern Europe.

Copenhagen Airport is required to invest DKK 500 million a year but in recent years investment has reached approximately DKK 750 million. According to the chairman of the board, this could increase to DKK one billion as early as next year. But as the managing director explains, there is still uncertainty about the definitive amount.

- Our investment will depend on growth and is therefore something that we will look at continuously, says managing director, Thomas Woldbye. He adds that the amount will not be any lower next year.

- We have reached a stage where we cannot expand the existing area in any sensible way in the foreseeable future. By implication, we might build something new. Whether it will be a fourth terminal, we don’t yet know. That is what we will begin to look at now, he says.¨

- We are focusing on continuing to create the capacity that will allow us to become what we call the “Gateway of Northern Europe”. And all the shareholders are behind us on this, says chairman of the board, Henrik Gürtler.

According to Henrik Gürtler, it is essential that Copenhagen Airport does not lag behind in the race against  airports such as Berlin and Amsterdam.

- If that happens, we will simply be reduced to being a small, regional and uninteresting airport. That is what it is all about. There are also other airports that would like to be considered the Gateway of Northern Europe - so we need to get ahead and establish the necessary capacity, he says.
