CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS
Rudersdal, with its extensive tracts of beautiful natural scenery, is an attractive municipality in which to reside.
Beautiful sights
The blue waters of the Øresund, as well as an abundance of lakes, marshlands, meadows, forests, landscaped parks, hills and dales, are all to be found in the municipality. And traversing this diversity of landscapes is the Rudersdal Route, a system of pathways of marathon proportions implemented by the municipality to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle.
The municipality also boasts some important historical sites. The remains of some of the earliest people in Denmark – Stone Age Hunters, dating back some 7,000 years – have been found in the municipality at Vedbæk. Present day urban society has roots dating back to the Viking Age, when the peasants would clear tracts of land in the great forests of northern Zealand.
There are a number of beautiful churches in the area, in particular the medieval church in Birkerød with its magnificent 14th century murals. And everywhere patrician villas and manor houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries intermingle with charming cottages and contemporary single-family houses with well-tended gardens to typify the urban and rural landscapes.
The many associations found in Rudersdal and the municipality’s rich cultural life bear witness to the active participation of its citizens. There are excellent libraries, museums and cinemas, and the municipal cultural centre stages a diversity of concerts, shows and travelling exhibitions. Children are well served with some of the best schools in the country and a wide range of leisure pursuits to choose from, including theatre, children’s galleries and special programmes of summer holiday activities.
Various outdoor opportunities
With the area’s natural beauty virtually on the doorstep, there is a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities - popular sports pursuits include tennis, golf, horse riding, sailing and cross-country skiing. The municipal sports facilities and swimming halls are extensively used by young and old alike, and with the recent opening of a new sports and activity centre in Birkerød the array of sports and leisure activity facilities for the public are today better than ever.
The municipality does not have one big commercial centre, but rather several town centres such as Birkerød with its pleasant pedestrian precinct, Holte Midtpunkt, Nærumvænge Square and Vedbæk. In these centres you will find everything you need, complemented by a range of fascinating speciality shops.
There are also course centres and conference centres, as well as a wide selection of excellent dining establishments, often set in attractive beachside, lakeside or forest locations. And the throbbing metropolis of Copenhagen and all that it has to offer – theatres, museums, exhibitions, shopping, conferences and much more – is only a short drive away.
