Korean biotech company to focus on Copenhagen
29-11-2006

Life science industries:

With new robust and healthy bacteria for the food and diet supplement industries, Korean Cell Biotech enters the European market through a new Danish-Korean joint venture.

With a stem of exceptionally robust bacteria for the European food, drug and diet supplement industries together with a number of health improving qualities, Korean Cell Biotech is now entering into Denmark, writes Berlingske Tidende.

The exceptional thing about the Korean bacteria is that they are protected by a dual coating: One ensures the survival of the bacteria through moisture, oxygen and high temperatures, the other coating protects the bacteria against gastric juice to enable them to reach the intestinal system unharmed and full.

The technology is called Duolac and is in other words bacteria equipped with both armour and acid proof rainwear.

“We are the only one to offer this technology. Therefore, our ambitions are also high,” says Søren B. Thomsen, CEO of Cell Biotech Europe.

Cell Biotech was founded in Korea in 1995 and is now quoted on the Kosdaq stock exchange in Korea. The turnover of the corporation was approximately DKK 100 million in 2005, and the company’s ambitions are sky high.

The EU-market for probiotics, which is where Cell Biotech wants to enter, has a value of approximately DKK 250 million annually. The market for supplements is growing by 15-17 per cent, whereas the market for functional food is just starting with wild growth rates from a low basis.

“The goal for Cell Biotech Europe is to obtain a market share of 25-30 per cent within three years,” says Søren B. Thomsen.

Denmarkis already represented in large numbers on the international scene of cultures for example for the dairy sector where Danisco and Chr. Hansen sit heavily on the market.

Cell Biotech was established in Copenhagen on 1 September this year and since then it has built a distribution network with agents in 21 countries.
