Copenhagen and the entire Medicon Valley region, with 15 area clinical research centers and 11 university hospitals among the total of 26 hospitals offer excellent conditions for basic research and education as well as for knowledge transfer between universities, hospitals and companies.
The large flow of products in development in Medicon Valley
requires strong clinical research support. This is provided by 15
area clinical research centers and 11 university hospitals among
the total of 26 hospitals.
Practically, all local hospital departments are involved in some
kind of project. Physicians and other health care professionals
have developed an efficient structure to serve this purpose in the
most optimal way.
The region’s hospitals have skilled and reliable researchers
familiar with clinical trials, and when the European Good Clinical
Practice (GCP) guidelines were established in 1991, Denmark
immediately put them into effect.
All Danish citizens enjoy free healthcare, and medical and
genetic data are tracked from birth to death, so all population
segments are represented in sampling. Moreover, the Danish patient
database is among the best maintained in the world.
Copenhagen and the entire Medicon Valley region offer excellent
conditions for basic research and education as well as for
knowledge transfer between universities, hospitals and companies.
The region stands out in several fields of scientific and
technological research such as applied microbiology, immunology,
nutrition and dietetics, endocrinology and metabolism, hepatology
and gastroenterology, infection diseases, and neuroscience.
Copenhagen’s remarkable growth in the life science sector has
been nurtured by strong, well-funded biomedical research at an
academic level. In Medicon Valley, about USD 270 million is spent
on research every year.
The quality of research conducted in Medicon Valley is reflected
in the number of published papers. In Copenhagen, the number of
published scientific papers is among the highest in Europe on a per
capita basis.
Medicon Valley’s six science parks also play an important role
in the successful transfer of knowledge from the research
environment to commercial application. Moreover, the region is home
to 11 university hospitals and 14 universities.
Traditionally, Denmark has a strong research environment.
According to the Danish Association for the Pharmaceutical
Industry, only Switzerland surpasses Denmark and Sweden when it
comes to R&D spending per capita in the European pharmaceutical
industry.
Research in Medicon Valley is of very high quality, and it is
also highly accessible owing to the exceptional spirit of
co-operation that exists between the public and private life
science sectors in Scandinavia.
