The size of the Danish venture capital market

The Danish venture capital market has seen an overall increase of 18 investors from 1998 to 2006. The number of investors peaked in 2002 and has been slightly decreasing since, as illustrated in figure 1. The total number of investors includes venture funds, corporate venture companies, and public as well as private incubators.

Number of investors

A common way to measure the size of the venture capital market is to look at the total capital under management in the market. This number reveals that the Danish venture capital market has experienced continuous growth since 1998 with the exception of 2003, as illustrated below. Consequently, the market size has increased with more than 400 per cent since 1998, now amounting to DKK 20.1 billion. All in all, considering the declining number of investors the tendency seems to be fewer but larger investors.

Capital under management

As a significant part of the capital under management is already invested, the above-mentioned DKK 20.1 billion does not represent the capital currently available for future venture investments. In 2005 the allocation between already invested capital and current available capital was 65 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively.
