Establishing a distribution centre in Copenhagen

How you can benefit from using Copenhagen as a Scandinavian distribution hub.

The geographic position of Copenhagen in Northern Europe, the modern infrastructure, and its highly efficient transport and distribution sector have provided the necessary incentive for the establishment of distribution centres for many companies and organisations. All major European cities can be reached by air in a matter of hours and by land in appox. 24 hours.

For companies considering establishing a regional distribution centre, the Copenhagen region offers a number of benefits:

  • Closeness to the densely populated areas in the region and to a large number of delivery points
Copenhagen has the highest population density in Scandinavia and is the centre of the largest city region in the Danish-Swedish Øresund area.
  • The quality of the infrastructure connecting the region, allowing effective distribution within the area
Copenhagen is the major distribution hub of Scandinavia with the largest airport and ports, measured by number of connections, passenger and cargo traffic. For more information, please refer to the guide regarding Copenhagen infrastructure. On a national scale, Denmark is found among the top 10 in the 2005 IMD rankings in the category “Quality of Air Transportation”, in top 5 in the category “Distribution Infrastructure”, and in top 3 in the categories of “Water Transportation” and “Efficiency of Customs Authorities”.
  • Integration between different modes of transportation (intermodal transportation systems) to reduce reloading costs and time and to increase efficiency. Major logistics providers are implementing new intermodal transport systems. A new multimodal transport solution is being created at Copenhagen Airport. The airport cargo area is connected to a modern railway and highways, and located a very short distance from modern port facilities. The area is therefore one of the Airport areas in Europe with the easiest access to both sea, road and rail connections.
  • Representation of major third party transport and logistics suppliers that can provide excellent services and outsourcing opportunities. Major logistic operators such as DHL and FedEx have placed their Nordic operations in Copenhagen and are capable of handling all flows in an integrated supply chain. The logistic providers also secure availability of storage facilities and value-adding activities including repackaging, labelling etc.

Larger logistic operators in the region:

  • DHL
  • FedEx
  • DFDS Transport
  • Maersk Logistics
  • SEKO Global Logistics
  • Weblogistics
  • Copenhagen Malmø Port
  • Post Danmark
  • TNT
  • Schenker AG
  • DSV

The quality of the infrastructure combined with efficient transportation in the region makes it attractive to seek scale advantages and service improvements through restructuring of logistical operations.

With a regional set up it is possible to service a market of 24 million consumers. 80% can be serviced on a day-to-day basis from Copenhagen.

All major north/south and east/west bound routes in Scandinavia and the Baltic region – be it air, road, sea or rail – go though Copenhagen and the Øresund region.

Companies with a regional distribution centre in Copenhagen:

  • L’Oreal
  • Gillette
  • Bosch
  • GlaxoSmithKline
  • BASF
  • Sony Nordic
  • Lyreco
  • Toyota
