Copenhagen has the world’s major CO2 neutral hotelchain
02-05-2008
Property and construction:
The world’s first 100 per cent climate-neutral hotelchain is located in Copenhagen. The chain consists of four minor hotels and carries the name of Brøchner Hotels.
“There are a great number of major international hotelchains which are working actively today with economy measures with regard to energy and climate reductions and which have set up ambitious goals of becoming climate neutral one day. However, we are actually – as far as I know – the first chain in the world, which has gone the whole length already now,” says General Manager Kirsten Brøchner who is also co-owner of the – globally – very small chain, consisting of four Copenhagen hotels, to Børsen Business Daily.
The Brøchner Hotels’ CO2 neutrality has been reached by acquisition and destruction of quotas through the European system for trade with CO2 quotas – quotas corresponding to the hotelchain’s entire CO2 emission during 2007 and the first quarter of 2008. Consequently the altogether limit for CO2 emission in the EU is lowered, the quota prices are forced up and an actual pressure is created on the energy companies and industry companies, which are part of the system to find new and more climate friendly ways in which to produce energy.
To Kirsten Brøchner the motivation behind the hotelchain’s climate move is primarily the wish to be personally responsible for the global climate problems. Moreover, it is also important that the step at the end of the day will have a positive effect on the bottom line.
Moreover, the Brøchner Hotels’ climate plan includes an ambition of engaging other hotels in the global climate struggle. This can take place on the chain’s website www.co2neutralhotels.com where other hotels are invited to become 100 per cent CO2 neutral.
